Editorial policy
Duly Named is free because of advertising, affiliate links, and sponsors. Here's how we keep that from getting in the way of useful, honest content.
Name ideas
Our name lists and the structure of our name generator are designed and curated by us, with help from AI tools. Sponsors can't pay to have names included in our generator or name lists, and they don't review or approve name pages.
How our articles are written
We draft name guides with help from AI tools, and a person reviews and edits every guide before it's published. The Smarter names button uses an AI model to suggest names in real time.
Sponsored name guides
A sponsor may present one of our name guides, shown as "Sponsored · Presented by [sponsor]" at the top. Sponsors don't choose, write, or edit the names, and we pick the names the same way as on every other page.
Sponsored planning guides
Some guides in our Plan ahead section are written by, and paid for by, a sponsor, such as an estate-planning firm or an insurer. A sponsored guide on our site doesn't mean we endorse the sponsor or its products, services, or business practices.
Every sponsored guide:
- Is labeled at the top with "Sponsored" and the sponsor's name, so you know before you start reading.
- Names its author and their credentials. For legal topics, that's an attorney, including where they're licensed.
- Shows when it was last reviewed. Sponsors agree to review their guides at least once a year, and sooner when the law changes.
- Cites its sources where it relies on laws, regulations, or official guidance.
- Is edited by us before publishing. We check guides for clarity, balance, and obvious errors, and we won't publish content that is misleading or that reads purely as a sales pitch.
- Includes a link to the sponsor's website, labeled as sponsored.
Guides sponsored by law firms are labeled "Attorney Advertising" where the sponsor's state rules require it.
We keep final say over what's published, and we can update, re-label, or remove any sponsored guide at any time.
Not legal, financial, or insurance advice
Planning guides explain general concepts. Laws differ by state and change over time, and reading a guide doesn't create an attorney-client or advisory relationship with the author, the sponsor, or us. We aren't your lawyer and can't guarantee that every statement fits your state or situation. For advice about your situation, talk to a licensed professional in your state.
Product recommendations
Products in "Make it official" boxes and name previews may be affiliate links or paid placements. Their order isn't a ranking of quality, and we only include retailers we'd be comfortable sending readers to.
Affiliate links and ads
Some product links earn us a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you, and they're labeled with an Ad Disclosure. Ads are served by advertising partners and are separate from our content. See our privacy page for details.
